Lenses are appropriately designed optical systems with the purpose of forming an image of an object. The image can be observed directly, as with microscopes, telescopes or be collected by a sensor.
In addition to its construction characteristics, a lens is distinguished by its brightness, through its F/N aperture, focal length and angle of view. Then there is the resolving power, one of the most important parameters, often an indication of the quality of a lens, and represents the ability to discriminate a given number of lines per millimetre; the sharper the lines, the higher the resolving power.
